"Unfortunately, we live in a throw-away society and included with the plastic bottles and other trash are unwanted pets.

Across our country, 10-12 million pets are euthanized annually -- that's 27,473 pets every 24 hours.

In all, 70,000 kittens and puppies are born in the U.S. every day. One out of every four healthy and bright-eyed kittens is destroyed daily. In all, 25 percent of all pets in shelters are purebred.

Spaying and neutering makes your pet healthier, gives it a long life and makes it happier. Early age altering has been done in the U.S. for over 25 years. Pets can be safely spayed and neutered at an early age. You may try to justify your pet having litters because you are sure you can find loving homes for the kittens or puppies."

"Spay Day USA is an annual event held the last Tuesday of February.
This year it falls on Feb. 26. Created by the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) in 1995, Spay Day USA became a program of The Humane Society of the United States when the two combined operations in 2006.

Spay Day USA is America’s first and only national day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of pets. During Spay Day, veterinarians, animal welfare professionals, businesses and concerned
citizens join forces nationwide to spay or neuter as many animals as possible, while promoting spay/neuter as an essential component of
good pet health. It’s the effective and humane means of decreasing the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters."

Lady

For some reason I was reminded today of a dog my sister and I had when we were growing up. Lady was a beautiful, loving bulldog and we loved her as much as she loved us.

Lady made us laugh. We lived in a small subdivision then and there wasn't much traffic. Lady's favorite place to lay down for a nap was in the middle of the street. Nothing we said or did could change that. Everybody knew her so they'd drive up, blow their horn, and she'd get up and move to let them by.

One day she didn't move fast enough and a car tapped her leg and broke it. We thought that would be the end of her naps in the street but she went right back to her old ways before her leg even healed.

She would often follow us to school which was about 3 miles away. The teacher would call my dad and he'd come pick her up. She never stopped doing that either. She'd follow us at least three days a week.

Lady lived a long, happy life. The day came, of course, when she passed away in her sleep. Yes, she was laying in the middle of her street when it happened.

We still remember Lady with love.


This is not Lady but sure comes close.

Pets In Palm Beach

"More than 150,000 dogs and cats were put to death in Palm Beach County's publicly funded animal shelters over the past 10 years.

It's a sad statistic that people usually don't like to talk about. But one of the biggest political questions in South Florida suddenly is how to reduce the number of abandoned and unwanted pets.

Dozens of impassioned pet lovers lined up Tuesday night to speak and listen at a contentious town hall meeting hosted by County Commissioner Bob Kanjian about a proposed ordinance requiring most dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered."



" This past February, Assembly Bill 1634, the California Healthy Pets Act, was introduced to address this horrific problem by promoting responsible pet ownership in California by requiring most dog and cat owners to spay or neuter their pet by the age of six months.

The bill has many common sense exemptions for legitimate breeders, show animals, police dogs, guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and for dogs and cats too old or too sick to undergo surgery. Spay and neuter ordinances and laws have been proven to be an effective solution throughout California and the United States. In addition, dogs that are not spayed or neutered are three times more likely to attack humans and other dogs and cats. California leads the nation in dog bites and maulings."

Dogs Don't Care

" I really do like people ... I just like my dogs better. There is one and one reason only for this: unconditional love.

Humans are jerks. Humans put dogs on chains for their entire lives, abandon them to fend for themselves, keep them in puppy mills in conditions unimaginable, beat them, degrade them, and on and on.

But dogs are forgiving. Nearly every dog that's been abused forgives and will go on to become loyal to another human.

Humans are vain. We often talk of ourselves and boost our own egos about our possessions, our beliefs, or our status in society.

Dogs couldn't care less. They don't care if we have a new or an old car, as long as they get to go for a ride. They don't care if we have a prestigious job, as long as there's enough money for food in their bowls."
