Non-Disposable Pets
This is a sad article. I had no idea this was happening.
"Much about college life is temporary — classes last a semester, majors change, living arrangements endure maybe a school year and friendships come and go. But pets should not be part of that flux.
Yet every spring, as thousands of University of Arizona students pack up and leave Tucson for the summer or for good, local animal shelters notice a spike in dogs and cats being dropped off, unwanted.
If you can't commit to an animal for its lifetime — which usually lasts more than a school year — don't get a pet. To adopt a dog, cat, pet mouse or tortoise requires responsibility, maturity and the decency to understand that animals are not disposable."

Animal Control Or Humane Society ?
Alabama News:
"The city of Birmingham and Jefferson County pay just over $1 million a year to the shelter to round up nearly 12,000 lost dogs, cats, and neglected animals, viscous or sick strays and take in unwanted pets. The money also pays to run the shelter, covering a full-time veterinarian, funding equipment like trucks, and providing care for the animals, Smith explains.
“There's just a misunderstanding. A lot of people don't know the difference between a humane society and an animal control program. And they expect control programs to operate like a humane society. We get a totally different kind of animals in here. We get animals that are neglected, abused, abandoned, they're sick, injured, they're in every possible condition you can imagine, as to where most animals in a humane shelter are brought in sitting beside somebody in a car," Smith says.
He believes it's partly that misunderstanding which sometimes draws fire from local animal rescue groups."

Shame On Miller Beer
I received this comment recently to another post here and I'd like to share it. I hope to talk more about this tomorrow but wanted to post a scan of this flyer now.
Thanks, Jason, for the information and scan.
"Unfortunately, there are some out there who think it is OK to diminish efforts to rescue lost and homeless pets in order to further their own agenda. I recently came across a lost dog flyer that had on it pictures of a dalmatian and pleas to help find him. But the number on the flyer actually connected me to a recorded phone message that was a pitch to drink Miller Lite beer. I guess it is related to their television ads that feature dals, but it really upset me on a number of levels. How many people will refrain from helping find a lost pet because they got burned by this promotion? And what is the Miller company saying about the work of rescue organizations and people working hard to rescue animals?"

Pet Pawties
Many thanks to Alphawolf for finding this article:
"Petlane products are sold through direct sales at "pet pawties" similar to candle or plastic container parties. The adviser for the party pays $199 for a kit that will make them $400 in return. The only prerequisite for becoming a Petlane representative?
"They have to be a pet lover," Nemeth says, because not only do they demonstrate new pet products, but they also answer questions about pet care."
Interested in throwing a "pet pawty"? Call Petlane at (888) 870-8324 or e-mail
info@petlane.com to find an adviser.
More thanks to Kystorms for this one:

The Business of Pets
"If you think the dog walking business can’t bring in enough money to make a decent living, think again. There are certainly many people who do it as a way to make some extra cash, but there are also those who put their whole heart and soul into it and turn it into a lucrative business."
"The pet industry, always huge here in the United States, is growing by leaps and bounds. This is true especially on the internet, where people and pets from all over the world can come together. Online communities for pet lovers are not new, but they do get better with each generation.
I had to sign Bree up for the new pet social network at An Amigo immediately, of course. The other canines can’t have something she doesn’t. If she were human I’d probably be going broke trying to dress her in upscale boutique clothing."

Please Sign The Petitions
"Ignoring tens of thousands of citizens like you, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has just made it much easier to kill wolves in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Rockies region -- wolves that still remain protected under the Endangered Species Act.
Take action now. Tell Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne that this rule change is unacceptable.
Wildlife officials will soon be able to shoot, trap and kill endangered wolves. Even those that wander from the safety of Yellowstone National Park and other protected areas could be killed.
This rule change allows officials to start killing wolves as soon as March. Please speak out today!"
"Every year, an estimated four to six million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal care and control facilities in the United States. This problem is pervasive, and it remains a source of shame for our country.
The American Humane Association's Getting to Zero Initiative is a national undertaking based on the profound belief that, within our lifetime, American society can reduce to zero the number of healthy or treatable dogs, cats and other companion animals that are euthanized in animal care and control facilities. Pit Bulls
"Bad dogs, or bad press? When it comes to pit bulls, it seems like most people assume it's the first. But it wasn't always that way.
A pit bull named Stubby earned the rank of sergeant in World War I and appeared on the cover of "Life" magazine. Loyal pet of the "Little Rascals" on TV, the breed also used to symbolize the nation in editorial cartoons and army posters at the beginning of the 20th century. At one time pit bull terriers were the classic American dog.
Despite this honorable history, they've fallen on hard times. But their defenders are working hard to redeem them.
This February, the ASPCA in New York City is introducing its Adopt-a-Bull contest, co-sponsored by the Animal Farm Foundation in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Open to adopters from shelters that use the ASPCA's Meet Your Match temperament testing, the grand prize winner will get a trip to New York and a $5,000 grant for their shelter."

Pets: Hurt By Foreclosures
"If you’ve been paying attention to the news at all lately, you know people are losing their homes to foreclosure all over the country. People aren’t the only ones being affected for the housing problem though. Pets are being left out in the cold - literally - as their owners leave them behind or drop them off at the local shelter. In Charlotte, NC and El Paso, TX humane societies are dealing with an influx of pets who have been abandoned in their empty homes or have been turned over by their owners when they lost their homes."

"One of the most wonderful -- and wondrous -- things about diving here in Hawaii, is the fact that some 10,000 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) spend the winter months in our waters. During the winter months, we get to see them frequently on the surface, and once in awhile, underwater as well."

Teaching And Learning
"Teaching The World About Wolves"
"The International Wolf Center advances the survival of wolf populations by teaching about wolves, their relationship to wild lands and the human role in their future."
"Welcome to the NEW Yakety Yak Pets, the Pet Community that has everyone talking! What are they talking about? Freedom of speech isn't only for people! Does your dog have something to get off his chest? Does your bird have a secret she wants to share? Does your cat want to sound off? Share pictures, videos, chat and more!"
"Lizzie was getting depressed at the Town Lake Animal Center. After being picked up as a stray in October, the troubled pit bull/terrier mix had spent several weeks at the shelter without being adopted. She was losing weight, growling when anyone approached her toys and even playing in her own waste.
"She was losing it," said Dorinda Pulliam, the shelter's director. "We call it cage crazy, and it really is."
Read the happy ending.

Animals: Internet Scams
"The fact that there are so many homeless dogs and cats is a sad thing to ponder. If you are like me (and a few humans I know) a trip to the local pound can be a heart breaking experience.
With so many unwanted animals in the world, it amazes me that anyone would buy an animal. Nonetheless for whatever reason, people do and the result is a lot of abuse and a fair amount of scam activity, especially when the "I word" (Internet) is involved."

Congressional Friends Of Animals
"The Congressional Friends of Animals (CFA) Caucus is a bipartisan congressional organization that raises awareness within Congress on animal welfare issues. It was founded in 1989 and is co-chaired by Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA).
The CFA organizes forums and briefings for Members of Congress and their staff on issues affecting animals and upcoming animal welfare legislation formed around the interests and needs of the members. CFA also tracks legislation and provides members of Congress with reliable, up-to-date information. Because the membership covers a wide spectrum of beliefs, the CFA does not write policy papers or produce issue briefs. The organization has achieved success in building coalitions among members on specific animal protection bills. CFA members have used the organization to help promote animal welfare issues of particular interest to them and their constituents."

Please Help The Wolves
"After more than a decade of conservation efforts and millions of federal dollars, wolves are finally returning to the northern Rockies.
Now, the Bush administration plans to remove wolves from the Endangered Species List and allow the states of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana to wipe out nearly 80 percent of all the wolves remaining in the Northern Rockies!
The Wyoming Plan allows anyone to kill any wolf that wanders outside a small area in the northwest corner of the state. The plan would even target animals that live for most of the year in Yellowstone National Park but only wander out in the winter in search of food.
Tell Congress to oppose the Bush administrations plans and make sure wolves are protected in the northern Rockies!"

The Dog Log Has New URL
"We purchased our own domain name a couple weeks ago, so we have a new URL for The Dog Log. For those of you who link to us, would you mind changing our address on your link list and if you had us marked as a favorite at Technorati, would you fav our new URL. Everything is being redirected from the old URL to the new one, but our Alexa ranking started all over as well as Technorati, and the more links the new one has, the more it will help us get better "paid to post" opportunities, so we can make more money to donate to needy pups. We appreciate your help."

Ask Ariel
"Holistic Pet Expert, Susan Blake Davis from Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist (www.AskAriel.com) is urging pet owners to take their pets to the veterinarian BEFORE their pets act sick. Davis says that holistic and preventative veterinary care are the keys to pet health and longevity. Her statement comes as a result of hearing heart wrenching tales from pet owners over the holidays seeking miracle cures because their pets needed to be euthanized and they didn’t even know they were sick."
